Gardenstown:  a day out for the family in Aberdeenshire

GARDENSTOWN, ABERDEENSHIRE

With the summer school break fast approaching, many families will be planning ahead for holidays and day trips.  Aberdeenshire is not short of places to go, regardless of the weather.  One of our favourite places for a day out with the family is Gardenstown in Aberdeenshire - known to locals as “Gamrie”.

Situated on the coastline of the North-east near Banff, Gardenstown is a short (20 miles) drive north from Saplinbrae. The drive to it forms much of the experience, taking in New Aberdour on the coastal road and going through Pennan.  Millshore Pottery is worth a visit at Pennan. On arrival to Gardenstown, you’ll quickly see why this unspoilt fishing village appeals to so many different age groups.

For the kids, there’s an expansive sandy beach with plenty of stones nearby for skimming. Grandparents will enjoy the fresh sea air and a trip down memory lane, whilst parents can enjoy connecting with nature in a peaceful location with stunning views.

An added bonus is the nice coffee shop in the village, Eli’s coffee shop, which serves up delicious desserts and ice-cream – popular with the children, parents and grandparents alike!

It makes for the perfect family day out, ticking many boxes:

  • Sandy beach

  • Rocky patches for stone-skimming

  • Fresh sea air

  • Coastal walks

  • Stunning views

  • Peaceful and untouched scenery

  • Harbour village

  • Heritage Centre (seasonal)

  • Dolphin spotting on the Moray Firth

  • Steeped in history

  • Wildlife

In the village itself, the community thrives, with its quaint fishermen’s houses, situated at the top of sandstone cliffs that overlook the bay beneath. The old harbour lives on with small creel fishing boats and pleasure craft, adding an idyllic touch to the place.

If you are staying at Saplinbrae and would like some pointers for places to go and what to see in the area, then just ask.  We are open all day, every day and here to help you enjoy your stay.
